The cover page depicts Mr Assibi Doogo, a member of the Sandemnaab’s house, playing the sampana-talking drum in 1973. We have chosen this photo not only because the talking-drum is an essential object of Bulsa material culture, whose ability to “speak” arouses astonishment and admiration among tourists, but also because the drummers often “drum” extracts from the history of the Bulsa and chiefly houses, thus keeping oral traditions in the memories of the audience.
